a quick rant

To those who wax poetic about how we're "not meant" to consume artificial sweeteners/chemicals/meat/antibiotics, be exposed to loud noises, wear shoes, what have you -

Stop going on like "natural" means "perfect". You know what else is "organic"? Poison ivy! And deadly nightshade! And arsenic! And until you are willing to forego all medicine, plumbing, and soap, and accept that your lifespan is "meant" to be no more than 30 or 40 years, I'm not going to buy that we're "meant" to eat the same diet as our hunter-gatherer ancestors.

Part of what makes humans so nifty is our adaptability. Sure, some things are healthier than others, and it's certainly worth studying to figure out what works and what doesn't. But your personal experience, however enlightening, does not automatically extrapolate to the entire human race.

I had a similar rant going in my head earlier today.

Working in the "health" industry, I find myself surrounded by people who get very superior with me if they see that I have purchased my coffee at a Starbucks, etc. While they much away at random chocolate in the breakroom.

this same co-worker (she's pretty much the worst of them) explained to me that she doesn't drink mammal milk because she likens it to puss. Like it's the biproduct of infectious disease. o.O!

Another fun way to get back at those people...

Point out that the sweeteners they decry ARE organic. it might be a different organic than they mean, but they are carbon based compounds...

My reasoning as to why I'm not meant to eat artificial sweeteners is because they all TASTE VILE. If I was meant to eat them they'd taste like something I enjoy eating.

Of course by that measure I'm also not meant to eat kale :)

I always wonder what people mean by the "meant" in arguments like this. "Meant" by whom exactly?

Yeah, bet they didn't think of the harm that chocolate wrapper has caused or how corn screams when it is harvested.

But as far as the hunter-gatherer diet goes, I've tried the acorn flat cakes and roasted raccoon and it isn't on my top of my favorite meals. However fire roasted sparrows could easily be the "natural" form of chicken nuggets, the bones do give a nice crunch.

Maybe they just need a nice hot cup of hemlock tea. Totally natural.

Yeah, those people bug me.

Thank you.

I get so sick of people criticizing me for being a Splenda fan.

Sugar makes me fat. Splenda makes me slender and healthy and not a psycho bitch from trying eat a boring diet.

I'm going with the Splenda, thanks.

A quick addition to your rant, because I sell non-"natural" cosmetics and run across this crap a lot. My ranty bit has nothing to do with cosmetics though.

Back when my sister's babe was teething, all of the "allnaturalnuts" told her to get Hyland's Teething Tablets because they were all natural.

She gave one to her kid and he lost consciousness. No kidding. Passed out and had to be taken to the hospital because she could not wake him up.

Yeah, Hyland's Teething Tablets' main natural ingredient is belladonna. Deadly Nightshade. Once this happened to her kid she started looking and found it happens to a lot of kids. Brilliant.

The only chemicals that aren't natural are the trans-Uranic elements. Actually even they are natural, if short lived.

You Godless Capitalist you!

Everyone knows that all natural means more perfect. I mean, weren't you around when they said that economic development and technological development that brought us away from a more natural and nature-connected way of existence scars Mother Earth?

And you love Mother Earth, don't you?
