AAARGH

*gets onto language geek soapbox*

There are two words. Rein. And reign. One refers to those straps that make a horse go where you want it to. The other refers to the rule of a monarch. Both can be used as either nouns or verbs.

When you "rein something in", you are metaphorically pulling on the straps to make the something slow down. YOU DO NOT "REIGN" SOMETHING IN. THIS MAKES NO SENSE.

Sorry for the rant, but I've seen this particular error half a dozen times today, and it's driving me batshit.

Thank you. It drives me crazy too.

Also when people say they will "make due" or "reap what they sew." ARGH!

"Reign in" seems like an eggcorn. Someone who wasn't taught the right spelling will probably hear "reign," since actual reins are so uncommon in the modern world. And it does make some sense: If you're exerting control over something, it's kind of like you're "reigning." (despite this, the two words aren't etymologically related. but I don't expect people to know that either.) I wouldn't be surprised if the alternate spelling became common enough over the next 30 or 40 years that we had to accept it.

I can understand it as an eggcorn if you're "giving someone free reign" - but "reign something in" changes the grammatical nature of the word, as "reign" in its proper form does not take a direct object; and thus it grates on me more.

And yeah, in 40 years it'll be commonly accepted, and I'll be one of the grumpy old farts talking about these kids with no respect for language and get the hell off my lawn!

In the area I live, despite the high overall education level, I often hear people call a drawer a "draw", as in "I need three draws to keep my sweaters in". Not only do they call it that, which I might excuse because of the infamous "Boston accent", but they write it that way!

ZOMG ONE OF THEM WAS TOTALLY ME.

...Except that I have no clue if you read my fic or not. But I totally typoed "reins" as "reigns" (and I should totally know better; I grew up in a horse-owning household). And it's clearly one of those things my eyes pass right over every read-through, too. -_-; Never fails.

Regardless, I went to check since you posed this, and sure enough I'd done it. XP Thank you, whether you read my silly stuff or not. XD

Heh, no, you weren't one of the ones that set me off. But, um, happy to help? :D
