new food sensations

While we were in Arizona a few weeks ago we went to a Sonoran hot dog stand. Sounds normal enough....

Imagine, if you will, a very tasty grilled hot dog, wrapped in bacon, with kidney beans, salsa, mustard, and mayo on a Really Fresh bun. I looked at it askance, but bit in - and oh my gods was it good. That's one thing I've noted about Mexican food and its derivatives - they manage to take the most bizarre taste combinations and make them blend seamlessly into something entirely new.

Our host, azadio, also instructed us in the construction of what I can only call the Best. Stealth. Hors d'Oeuvre. Ever. Take a slice of raw cucumber, squeeze a couple drops of lime juice onto it, and sprinkle with salt. It tastes like... like... tequila shot meets salad bar. And it's visually indistinguishable from plain cucumber, hence the Stealth Hors d'Oeuvre moniker.

I packed six boxes of books today. My back hurts, and I can only hope that it's due to the work rather than to me coming down with lordandrei's flu. Tired now!
