dude!

I've seen some research on the chemical basis for love before, but this article goes into much deeper detail than I have previously seen: The Science of Love (snarfed from shoebox_bird)

Some choice quotes:
"...humans (another species in the 3% of allegedly monogamous mammals)"

"So the brains of people deeply in love do not look like those of people experiencing strong emotions, but instead like those of people snorting coke."

"That raises the question of whether it is possible to treat this romantic state clinically, as can be done with OCD. The parents of any love-besotted teenager might want to know the answer to that."

Thanks for posting the link. I'm going to grab it up for my journal.

humans monogamous? hmph! polygamy is the culturally preferred marital combination throughout the majority of the world. Monogamy is *practiced* more often solely based on the fact that spouses are NOT cheaper by the dozen -- lack of resources for more spice means one spouse regardless of what one's cultures prefers...

Any primatologist worth their calipers can tell you that the most closely related ape to humans is Pan paniscus -- Bonobos. The furthest apes from humans are Hylobates -- Gibbons -- 98% monogamous (yes, gibbons have been observed having "adulterous" flings), and Orangutans -- almost wholly solitary except when paired for mating purposes.

[though I have witnessed a number of Homo sapiens sapiens acting as though fullblown OCD cases concerning courting...]
