[complain]

agonizing pain in dominant shoulder is Not Good (tm). feels kind of like a sprain, but I haven't done anything that would sprain it, so I'm kind of confused.

Hmm, online research indicates that rotator cuff tendonitis is a possibility. And in any case, ice and not using the shoulder would be good ideas. Dammit.

hey - i actually do have rotator cuff tendonitis. it helps to ice and then put a heat pack on, alternately. to work it out, a dr i had gave me a piece of rubber surgical tubing, and then i would do tension stretches w/it to strengthen it. and the pain SUX. mine acts up if i walk to fast sometimes. so, i totally feel for ya.

D'oh!
I guess you'll just have to use the other hand, then. I mean, it shouldn't be that difficult, Little-Miss-Hair-Trigger...

Painkillers?
I used to get pain that fit the rotator-cuff tendinitis symptom list when I played volleyball & swam in high school, although it was never diagnosed as such. Painkillers and ice did a fine job for me, and while it would hurt some, it wouldn't get *worse* even if I continued abusing it. And it would heal when the season ended. (Unlike a certain case of achilles tendinitis, which I'm still trying to fully shake after over four years. Sigh.)

Try sleeping differently, and if you carry a purse/bag/whatever, don't do it on that shoulder. (Heh. Now I remember one of my sillier habits in high-school -- I'd go to swing my backpack over my shoulder, and then remember it was the bad shoulder, and duck the backpack. It'd go flying, and I'd still have ahold of the strap. I was even less graceful then than I am now...)
