my computer is *much* happier now. and running xp. not sure how I like it yet. I also rearranged the office. I wonder if there's any humanly possible way to set up a computer with more than two peripherals without wires getting tangled (and I have, er, lessee - seven).

first thing I installed: cygwin
second thing I installed: livejournal

what that says about me I'm not quite sure....:)

Well, cable ties... :D

Hrm. As to the software, if I knew what Cygwin was I'd make a better guess...
Hrm. Looks like it could be this, in which case I'd say you're a geek-junkie to do us all proud. Failing that...if it's something else, we'll just say that you're obviously having fun and leave it at that. :D

Hrm. Meant to mention the cable ties were good for the peripherals and such. (Even if I haven't taken my own advice of late.) I suppose I should have been clear about that... :D

Good luck with the happy computer, too.

Re:
yeah, I've been using twist ties, and labeling the various wires - I guess it's better than nothing.

your guess on cygwin is correct. I may have left professional geekery, but I will not lose my edge!

Hey, unless you start shelling out for velcro or something, that sounds like a perfectly good plan to us.

Yay! Correct guess! You are a true artist/geekiatrix. Have fun!

Late question
I feel silly for not asking you before. Does your tablet have drivers that work in XP? What about your scanner?

I hope you didn't lose any hardware compatibility.

Re: Late question
While I'm not there to know, gut call is that she'll be fine. XP's pretty good about those, and if it doesn't hook them up natively, the drivers are probably out there. (Worst comes to worst, a 2000 driver might even kludge in...)

Re: Late question
yup, I checked all that before the change. I haven't actually reinstalled them yet, but they claim to work under xp, anyway :)

Lemme know what you think of xp. I'm thinking of going that way. My computer is really wonky, and I think to fix it I'm going to have to start from scratch -- reformat and reinstall everything. Bleah. So I figured I might as well move up to xp while I'm at it.

XP is nice, but you have to have a computer that'll run it. i'd say 256MB ram minimum and at least a 10GB drive to put it on. but other than that it seems to be a fine replacement for 98.
just my $.02

I'd agree to that, though I've seen a few machines handle XP with 196MB decently. Depends how much processor you've got, and how much weight you intend the RAM to pull on its own.
